YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING AND THE 7 CHAKRAS
The Seven Chakras meaning, colors and their impact on our physical and mental wellbeing
Chakra is a Sanskrit word that literally means Wheel in English.
These swirling wheels of universal energy align along the spine connecting our mind and physical and spiritual bodies. They are thought to be spinning disks of energy that should stay “open” and aligned.
Chakras refer to various energy centres in our body that correspond to specific nerve bundles, internal organs, levels of consciousness, natural elements, individual color, and other areas of our energetic body that affect our emotional and physical well-being.
The seven major chakras run from the base of our spine to the top of our head. If these energy centres get blocked, we may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra.
Each energy centre is associated with a different color, sound, and vibration, as well as specific organs and body parts. The reason why each chakra is associated with a specific color is because of its unique vibration.
Chakras are believed to be parts of the body where both the body and the spiritual, emotional, and physical meet, exuding a high amount of energy. Therefore, the blockage or malfunction of a chakra, of this flow of energy, may lead to spiritual, emotional, and physical disorders.
The seven Chakras each have a specific meaning, which is associated with a specific color. These colors are the same as the rainbow colors in hues and order.
Unsurprisingly, the chakra colors and meanings are directly related to the psychological meaning of the colors.
The root Chakra, “I AM”
Color: Red – Element: Earth – Glands: Gonads
The root chakra, or Muladhara, is located at the base of our spine.
The root chakra is the first energy wheel and serves as an opening and anchor to the rest of the primary chakras.
It provides us with a base or foundation for life, and it helps us feel grounded and able to withstand challenges. Our root chakra is responsible for our sense of security and stability.
Due to its connection to courage, willpower, survival, safety, and vitality, the Muladhara is closely linked to physical needs, which is represented by the red color. Like its color, the red chakra tells us to slow down, be mindful, and remain safe.
The Sacral chakra, “I FEEL”
Color: Orange – Element: Water – Glands: Reproductive organs
The Sacral chakra, or Svadhisthana, is located just below our belly button.
The sacral chakra is the centre of physical needs, pleasure stimulation, creativity, and self-worth. Like its color, the orange chakra exudes a feeling of warmth and excitement.
Being the centre of passion, the Svadhisthana begets not only the power to create but also to control the desire and needs of the body.
This chakra is responsible for our sexual and creative energy. It’s also linked to how we relate to our emotions as well as the emotions of others.
The solar Plexus Chakra, “I DO”
Color: Yellow – Element: Fire – Glands: Digestive system and adrenal glands
The solar plexus chakra, or Manipura, is located in the stomach area above the navel.
The solar plexus chakra boasts the color of sunshine, it is our constant source of power and where self-confidence manifests. Besides, it is associated with our sense of sight.
The strength of the yellow color shines bright like the uncovered sun and illuminates the “I” — our sense of self. Besides, the yellow chakra helps us feel confident, motivated, and powerful.
It’s responsible for confidence and self-esteem, as well as helping us feel in control of our life.
The heart Chakra, “I LOVE”
Color: Green – Element: Air – Glands: Thymus and lymph
The heart chakra, or Anahata, is located near our heart, in the centre of our chest.
The heart chakra is the balance point of all the other chakras and our center for compassion, empathy, forgiveness, and love.
Besides, the green chakra is represented by an equal amount of yellow and blue, giving it equivalent attributes of these two colors.
Moreover, the Anahata guides the feelings of trust, generosity, and gratitude in a person, which are in line with the meaning of the color green.
It comes as no surprise that the heart chakra is all about our ability to love and show compassion.
The throat Chakra, “I TALK”
Color: Blue – Element: Space – Glands: Jaws, teeth, throat, and other mouth glands.
The throat chakra, or Vishuddha, is located in our throat.
The throat chakra is responsible for the ability to communicate, creativity, and self-expression.
As it is near the end of the color spectrum, blue allows for the calmness of the mind and the slowing down of racing thoughts, enhancing our verbal and writing communication, and subsequently, our creativity.
Beyond that, the blue chakra allows us to use our energy effectively, especially in the artistic world.
This chakra has to do with our ability to communicate verbally.
The Third Eye Chakra, “I SEE”
Color: Indigo – Element: Light – Glands: Pineal.
The third eye chakra, or Ajna, is located between our eyes.
The third eye chakra affects universal consciousness, clarity, intuition, and self-knowledge. It also makes the link between the soul and the world around it clearer.
The color indigo is made up of two colors–blue and red, each with its own functions.
With red’s energy and blue’s calm, indigo is a color that inspires reflection and self-awareness. It balances the energy, power, and intensity of red and the relaxation, stability, and insight of blue.
Mastery of the indigo chakra leads to spiritual clarity, insight, and enhanced “sixth sense.”
You can thank this chakra for a strong gut instinct. That’s because the third eye is responsible for intuition. It’s also linked to imagination.
The crown Chakra, “I UNDERSTAND”
Color: Purple – Element: None – Glands: Hypothalamus and pituitary gland
The crown chakra, or Sahasrara, is located at the top of our head.
The crown chakra has the most spiritual properties of all seven chakras. The Sahasrara is also associated with the color purple/violet, which is widely associated with spirituality. Also, violet and white are considered universal colors.
The purple chakra is the center of enlightenment, dynamic thoughts, and spirituality.
In the same breath, while red has the longest wavelengths, and therefore the lowest vibration and frequency, violet has the shortest wave and highest frequency, allowing the connection of our soul, higher self, purpose, the universe, and the divine.
Your Sahasrara represents our spiritual connection to ourself, others, and the universe. It also plays a role in your life’s purpose.
Once you recognize the essence of the seven chakra colors, you can consider the practical techniques to keep them balanced all the time. It will enable you to stay fit emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
If a chakra is underactive, it can show up as depression and insecurity, if there’s too much energy, it can show up as fearlessness without precaution or hoarding because you need more to feel secure, as said by Diane Malaspina, PhD, a yoga medicine therapeutic specialist.
The chakra that’s out of balance may affect the parts of our body in close proximity to that chakra and may cause emotional imbalance.
Unbalanced chakras may affect both our physical and emotional well-being.
According to ancient Yogic practices, chakra centres can be activated through meditating, chanting mantras, doing specialized breathing exercises, using certain ayurvedic herbs, and doing physical exercises like yoga asana.
Each chakra has yoga poses that may help fine-tune its energy.
When all chakras are open and balanced, the mind, body and spiritual self, are healthy.
Reiki is also one of several techniques and methodologies which can 'open' or 'free' chakras that are blocked, which causes other chakras to become over-active, and thereby to restore a person's natural balance and physical and emotional well-being.
Massage therapy is also believed to help realign and rebalance the energy flow through the chakras.
